Headteacher’s Newsletter – Friday 7th July

After an action packed week I think we are all looking forward to a relaxing weekend! When we set the dates in the diary for the first week in July back in September, the only event in the calendar was Open Evening, how quickly that all changed! Our annual school journey meeting for Year 5 parents kick started the week’s events and it finished with the first dress rehearsal of the Year 6 production of Joseph for the children and staff from the Infant school. We welcomed Derek Redmond the former 400 metre world champion to school on Wednesday morning (and he didn’t disappoint) and you came in large numbers for Open Evening. Next week will be another busy week too and the focus moves to our children in Year 6. They will perform and dance sing and shout; we wish them luck as they tread the boards and prepare for their end of year party. Please remember in the hot weather to send your child to school with their red school hat and a bottle of water.

The word of the week is – COMPANION – Where is Christ’s teaching of inner peace and happiness witnessed in your life? How do we make Christ our friend and put him at the centre of our lives?

Derek Redmond – On Wednesday morning and most of the afternoon the whole school was empowered by the visit of the former World Champion and former Olympic athlete Derek Redmond. He spoke to the whole school about his action packed career with great interest. One of highs and lows but his message was very clear – if you want to succeed in life be the person you want to be. His inspirational story and resilience was a clear message to us all. Thank you Derek for infecting us with your energy and enthusiasm. Remember children – aspiration, dedication, discipline and hard work.

Santa Maria Education Fund – Thank you to those of you who have sent in your sponsorship money in support of this excellent charity. The final day to send in all money is MONDAY 10th JULY.

Open Evening – We welcomed many families on Thursday evening to our annual Open Evening. The children and staff have worked incredibly hard through the year and to showcase their efforts has been one of the highlights of the year. The quality of work on display and the high standards everyone has achieved is testament to the efforts of the whole community. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the evening a great success.

Year 4 Trip to Whipsnade Zoo – The children and staff from year 4 made the short trip to Whipsnade Zoo on Tuesday and were treated to the spectacular sights. They enjoyed the Lemur breakfast and watching the flamingos in their natural environment. The African hunting dogs certainly caused a stir and the opportunity to stroke a snake caused great excitement. The children were very well behaved through the day and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

Grenfell Tower Disaster – Over £750 has been collected for the victims and families of this national tragedy. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this very worthwhile cause. All money will be sent to the Catholic Children’s Society who are supporting those in needs of assistance.
