Headteacher’s Newsletter – Friday 19th May

The weather has been very dreary through the week but it hasn’t dampened everyone’s spirits. The children continue to work hard and I have had the privilege of observing the teaching of science through the school this week with Miss Elliott our Science subject leader. The focus of the observations was on the way learning was structured to incorporate the constructivist  approach to the teaching of science. Year 3 spent their lesson looking at the properties of magnets, Year 4 were set a challenge using electricity whilst Year 6 investigated adaptations birds make to survive to survive in their environments. They were a well planned and clearly delivered set of lessons. Year 3 parents joined their child this morning at the first of our Maths workshops. They learnt how to Go A.P.E and were impressed with the children’s knowledge. One child told me he enjoyed the session because he got to beat his mother every time they played a particular game! We look forward to celebrating with our Year 3 children tomorrow as they receive Jesus for the first time at their First Holy Communion. Have a lovely day children and pray for good weather.

The Word of the Week is – HELPER – How do you allow the Spirit to guide you in your life? In what ways are his gifts and fruits directing your decisions?

NEXT WEEK YEAR 6 HAVE CYCLING TRAINING FROM MONDAY THROUGH TO FRIDAY. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL BIKES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND ARE ROAD WORTHY. ALL BIKES WILL BE CHAINED TO THE RAILINGS. THE SCHOOL CAN NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY BIKES LEFT ON THE SCHOOL PREMISES.

A Message from the PTA – Disco Thanks
Thank you very much to the parents and staff who helped at the disco last week and, in particular, to the Year 5 parents who took the lead in setting up and running the event. This was the third and final disco of the year. In total the discos this school year have raised approximately £2500 – an amazing amount. To raise that amount, as well as giving the children an evening of fun, requires a great deal of time and effort. Ann Moss has done a magnificent job, not only this year but in previous years.
We need more people to get involved to make organising these events easier. If your children enjoy the discos, please consider joining the team so that we can ensure they continue. Email ssaspta@gmail.com. Thank you

Sainsbury’s Voucher – This year we collected 10,963 vouchers. Thank you to everyone who contributed and sent in a voucher or two. Every year Mrs Selkirk selects new PE equipment to replenish any items that have worn or broken through the year with the vouchers. We will tweet a picture once the items arrive in school.

New Gates – The gates have finally been installed and many of you have commented on how much you like them and the fact that they will offer extra security to the building. The workmen have ensured that they completed the job on time despite the weather. The pedestrian gate releases a magnetic lock once the green button on the adjacent wall has been pushed and will close automatically behind you. Parents need to use this gate if they are to collect or drop their child to school during the school day. The gates are a welcome addition to the school and will keep everyone safe.
