Headteacher’s Newsletter February 24th 2017

After a very mixed week of weather which saw storm Doris create havoc across the country we have come to the first weekend of the half term. It has been another busy week; Years 4,5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the theatre to watch matinee performances of the Lion King and Aladdin. The boys football team play a double header this evening against Cunningham Hill Juniors and we celebrate Ash Wednesday mass as a school community next week to signal the beginning of Lent. Anne Main the MP for St Albans met with the school council today and asked her some very searching and quite challenging questions. They were excellent role models and ambassadors for our school and were a great credit to the classes they represent. Thank you children. Please remember to label your child’s school uniform, the lost property mountain continues to rise every week. Keep sending in your Sainsbury’s vouchers. Last year we collected enough to order a set walkie talkie radios which were used extensively on the Year 6 school journey to Stackpole. We look forward to welcoming you to mass next Wednesday at 11 o’clock.

The words of the week are: GOD’S KINGDOM – Where is the Kingdom of God in your life? We are challenged in this Sunday’s gospel to live more like Jesus and to let God’s kingdom grow in our hearts. We must let go and let God.

Dragons Apprentice Challenge – After a hard six weeks of organising and delivering three excellent initiatives the Dragons Apprentice from Year 5,  The News Warriors, gave their presentations in the boardroom at the local council offices late last half term. They faced tough questioning from three very experienced dragons who run local and national businesses.The children a gave very good account of themselves and spoke with confidence and clarity. Preparation was a key factor in helping them to deliver such a comprehensive presentation. They left a lasting impression and were given lots of praise before they left the boardroom to wait on the final result of the competition. News came through the following week that they had won two out of the seven categories of the challenge. They were the Overall Winners and Most Innovative Business Idea. Congratulations to the News Warriors! They managed to raise £326 for the Talking Newspapers Charity which was a fantastic achievement. Please read the letter below which was sent by the charity thanking them for their achievements.

Theatre Visits – Children from Years 4 5 and 6 enjoyed their visit to the Lyceum and the Prince Edward theatres this week to attend the matinee performances of Aladdin and the Lion King. It was a rich cultural experience for the children, something many of them have expressed as being a great trip. They were spellbound by the sights and the sounds and returned to school exhausted but full of happy memories.

St Albans MP Anne Main Visit – The school council met with Anne Main the MP for St Albans and listened very attentively to her as she spent a great deal of time answering their questions. They ranged from issues such as congestion and free parking to reducing NHS waiting lists. She was very impressed with the quality of the children’s questions and enjoyed her visit a great deal.

Ash Wednesday

Fire so golden, ash so grey,

Now we come to God and pray;

Fire so lovely, ash so dead,

Our confession must be said;

Heaven’s wind, blow ash away,

Round God’s fire let us stay.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!
